General Social Resources

Findhelp.org is a website that allows a student to enter their zip code and find resources near them to help with issues such as housing, food, financial support, healthcare resources, and childcare. It allows people to review the services to help people choose which resource fits their needs. It is specifically designed for people of low income.

Food Resources

  • FoodPantries.org provides an up-to-date list of food pantries in cities and counties all across Virginia. It has a page for Albemarle county that provides a list of local food pantries as well as their website, address, and hours of operation.
  • UVA has a food pantry that operates on grounds if transportation to others is a challenge. They also provide recipes to help students use the food as efficiently as possible.
  • The UVA Women’s Center has a satellite food pantry in addition to UVA’s main pantry on grounds. The location is on the corner and is walking distance from housing around the corner. The Orange line has a stop across the street from it.

Transportation Resources

  • TransLoc
    • UVA provides a free bus system for students. There are three main routes for students to use. The Orange line runs north to south on the eastern side of grounds. The Green line also runs north to south but on the western side of grounds. The Gold line provides transportation for students from grounds to a nearby shopping center called The Shops at Barracks Road, which has a grocery store and other helpful retailers for students. The University has an app for students called TransLoc that allows them to track the buses in real time so they know approximately when the bus will arrive at their desired stop.
  • Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT)
    • Charlottesville has their own public transportation system referred to as CAT. Their website gives information on bus stops across the city and allows real-time tracking of the buses’ locations. They have a page that allows students to plan out routes ahead of time and displays bus routes that they can use to get to their desired stop.
  • University of Virginia Parking and Transportation
    • UVA provides a website with other transportation resources for students to use to get to several airports in Virginia. This includes Richmond International, Dulles International, and Charlottesville Albemarle. The website also provides students access to Amtrak and Greyhound routes and tickets.

Facebook Housing Groups

Most UVA students have had a bad experience with housing, this seems to be a common college experience. Facebook groups allow a space to find roommates and housing options. This can help future UVA students or present UVA students live with people they want and avoid having a bad assigned random roommate. Facebook groups can help find available housing spaces that match with an individual student's budget since the housing market around UVA is competitive and expensive. It can also help find future roommates that can help reduce the monthly cost of your housing situation.

Apartment Costs

UVA provides the cost of all their on-grounds housing options. This resource can be a great way to compare prices with off-grounds housing. When making big financial decisions such as housing it can be good to compare the monthly prices, utilities costs, parking, location, etc.

Budgeting Calculator

Going to college can be a stressful experience because of all the new responsibilities like paying for rent, groceries, books, etc. A budgeting calculator set for college students can help manage their specific college needs like books, tuition, etc. This would be a better tool for managing money and work as a learning tool. Budgeting can help UVA students know what type of housing and amenities they can afford while taking into account all other expenses.
